What does it cost to install a charging station for an electric car?
Charging an EV at home is much cheaper than filling up at a petrol station. However, you must first have a home charging station installed if you want to enjoy all the benefits. In this article we explain what you need to consider.
The cost of installing a home charging station depends on a number of factors, including the capacity of your meter box, the complexity of the installation and the distance between the meter box and your charger. We take a closer look at the various aspects.
Charging station
The home charging station is available in three charging levels. A portable charger works with 230 volts, i.e. on your normal wall socket, and can be purchased for as little as 200 euros. However, we recommend that you choose a charging station that allows you to charge more quickly and safely. 230V sockets can cause problems in older houses with old wiring if a lot of current passes through them for a long time. The heat build-up can then rise too high. Always charge responsibly.
Installation material
Another expense when installing a home charging station is the installation material. If you do not have a 230V socket near your garage, an electrician will have to install a new electrical circuit. An electrical circuit simply consists of the power connection, the wire and the circuit breaker. Together, these components ensure that power can flow safely from your meter box via the charger to your home.
The cost of this depends very much on the electrical capacity of your house/meter box and where the charging station is located in relation to the meter box. In some cases, additional materials or components such as pipes (which protect the wiring), excavation work or a new meter box may be required. Thus, the costs can vary from approximately 200 to 2,000 euros.
If the meter box is near your charging station garage and your house has the right electrical capacity, the amount of electrical work and materials will be limited.
The work of the electrician
The final part of installing a home charging station is the electrician's labour. To make the search for the right electrician considerably easier, Soolutions has created the configurator. You enter your license plate number or electric car model, how many kilometres you drive and after a few simple choices you get to see the total price of your installation. This includes the costs for the charging station, the installation costs and any reinforcements to your meter box. All electricians have been assessed by Soolutions and they will tell you exactly what you can expect to pay for the installation. Openness and transparency are key in the Soolutions configurator.
The installation of a charging station does not necessarily require an electrician, but for your own safety and for extra assurance of a correct installation, an electrician is highly recommended.
Depending on the amount of work needed and the situation in your home, the electrician's bill will be between EUR 300 and EUR 1,500. Keep in mind that these costs are for labour only. All in all, the total installation of a charger, i.e. including the purchase of the charger, will cost between €1,000 and €3,000. Of course, this amount depends on the charger you have in mind, your wishes and the situation in your home. If you need more information, please visit the Soolutions webshop (link).
